Mill History

Abraham Moon & Sons was founded in 1837 in Guiseley, Yorkshire by Abraham Moon. In its early years, Moon supplied yarn to local weavers or paid home weavers to weave cloth, which he then collected, washed, finished, and sold. By 1868, the business had grown enough to build a three-storey mill on Netherfield Road in Guiseley. In 1902, a fire destroyed the original mill structure; it was replaced by a larger single-storey, fully vertical facility, consolidating all processes – blending, carding, spinning, weaving, dyeing, finishing – under one roof.

In 1920, Charles H. Walsh, then the mill manager, purchased the company from the Moon family. After Walsh's death, ownership passed through his family; to this day, the Walsh family remains in control.

Over time, Moon came to be recognized as one of Britain's most distinguished woollen mills. It remains one of the rare survivors of fully vertical woollen manufacturing in the UK, overseeing every stage from raw fleece to finished fabric in Guiseley. In recent years, the mill has emphasized sustainability and traceability. It also retains a large color library (over 500 shades) and precise dyeing and blending control to maintain consistent palette identity.

Today, Moon fabrics are used worldwide in apparel, upholstery, interior furnishings, and home textiles.

Why We Love Abraham Moon

Abraham Moon is very well known for their traditional tweeds, exceptional flannels, and tartan-based cloths for dinner wear – their barathea cloth is incomparable and a favorite choice of our master fitters.

Abraham Moon is a smaller mill, but they make a big impact – they're an affordable price point for the impressive quality of their fabrics. Shepherd's customers mainly gravitate towards their tweeds and tartans.
