Mill History

In 1842, at age 22, Jules Dormeuil founded the company by importing fine English fabrics into France, part of his vision to introduce superior cloths to Parisian clientele. Over time, his brothers Alfred and Auguste joined, and the business was renamed Dormeuil Frères, with its registered office at 4 Rue Vivienne in Paris. The first foreign boutique was opened in London, at 10 New Burlington Street, linking the firm to the capital of tailoring.

Over decades, the house launched landmark fabrics and innovations: Sportex (1922), Frilex, Tonik (1957), and later Laser, a high-twist fabric. These lines often combined refined aesthetic and technical performance into attributes like cooling, drape, and movement.

In the 20th and 21st centuries, Dormeuil expanded globally, opening offices and subsidiaries in the major fashion capitals of London, New York, Milan, Shanghai, Tokyo, and New Delhi.

Under Dominic Dormeuil and the Dormeuil family, the company continues marrying tradition and innovation, selecting rare fibers globally, developing new fabric technologies and finishes, and maintaining presence in both the luxury tailoring and prêt-à-porter markets.

Why We Love Dormeuil

Dormeuil is one of the higher-end luxury cloths Shepherd's carries. They offer quite a wide fabric selection – from plains to checks to stripes, Dormeuil creates fabrics that will catch your eye. What makes Dormeuil especially unique is their method of combining atypical colors to create typical suiting colors. A Dormeuil grey suit may have black, beige, gold, and green threads woven together to achieve a grey with unmatched depth. Much like looking at a Rothko painting, a closer examination reveals layers of color to create visual dimension.

Our master fitters at Shepherd's want to particularly highlight their line called Dormeuil Tonik – it's a high-twist wool with natural stretch and a beautiful finish, often used for Shepherd's tuxedos. We would recommend Dormeuil for sports jackets and suiting, as well.
